Sometimes, it’s necessary to address the elephant (or cricket) in the room and have those difficult conversations, even if they make us uncomfortable. But let’s be honest, Chatting the Weird Out won’t resolve every issue possible. Sometimes, the situation is more serious than having a honest conversation. If that’s the case, who can help?
Citizens Advice Bureau (CAB)
Is an independent advocacy organisation that offers free, confidential information and advice. Their focus is on educating people about their legal rights, helping them access services, and supporting them in taking necessary actions. If you need assistance, you can contact your local CAB directly or call them at 0800 367 222.
Netsafe
iIs New Zealand’s independent, non-profit online safety organisation providing online safety support, expertise, and education to people in New Zealand. If you or someone you know has been harmed online, Netsafe offers a social media and online safety helpline where you can seek support by calling 0508 638 723, texting “Netsafe” to 4282, or submitting an online harm report.
Tenancy Services NZ
Can provide guidance and services for rental agreements. You can call Tenancy Services NZ on 0800 836 262.
1737 - Need to Talk?
Is a free helpline available in New Zealand. You can call or text 1737 at any time, 24/7, to talk to trained counsellors or peer support workers when you’re feeling down, anxious, or overwhelmed.
If you are experiencing harm in a private environment, such as a gym or a store, do not hesitate to contact the manager, as they should be able to assist you. If, for any reason, they are unable to support you and you would like to take this further, you can contact Emergency Services on 111 if you are in immediate danger or get in touch with your local Citizen Advice Bureau Office to figure out what’s next.
